SERVICES

Out patient Department

Outpatient Department is functioning on all weekdays. Six units, (M1 to M6) each headed by a Professor or Associate Professor, manage the respective OPs from Monday to Saturday. Sunday there is no OP, Sunday casualty duty and admissions from casualty are looked after by the 6 units by rotation

CASUALTY

Casualty services are available round the clock. Casualty is manned by a junior resident and 2 house surgeons, under supervision of the Duty Medical Officer. Casualty has 24 hour ECG, X- Ray and an ICU with 2 ventilators. Senior medical officers of the respective units are available on call round the clock.

WARDS

There are a total of 12 wards, 6 male wards, 5 female wards and one ward for infectious diseases. Wards 1to 8, 21, 31, 36 and 43. Each ward has 28 to 30 beds. Presently there is no separate ward for hematology and haemato-oncology. Patients are currently admitted under M1 unit and treated in respective male and female wards of M1 unit.

ICU

There is a fully functioning well-equipped general ICU with 12 beds and 6 ventilators. There are also 2 ICUs for hemato oncology with 10 beds for males and 6 beds for females. There are 2 ICUs for treating snakebite patients with 6 beds for males and 4 beds for females.

We cater a group of HIV positive  individuals  referred from 5 Northern districts of Kerala. 3025 registered cases and 1729 patients on AART. Average OPD visits 50 – 60/day.

OP days : Monday to Saturday

Functions of ART:

  1. Counseling of patients who are registered in the ART clinic
  2. Pyscho social support for PLHA
  3. Antiretroviral therapy free of cost
  4. Free CD4 testing
  5. All opportunistic infection drugs are given free of cost

Studies in progress:

  1. Quality of life assessment after 6 months of ART
  2. PAP smear in PLHA women
  3. Role of nutrition in disease progression
  4. Metabolic derangement in patients on ART

Associated organizations:

  1. Community Care Centre (IPM) where patients with minor opportunistic infections, psychological distress and for initiation of anti-retroviral therapy are admitted.
  2. PRATHYASHA (Drop in centre) for PLHA.
  3. THANAL   (A care centre for destitute PLHA) under Daya Charitable Society.

Statistics

Medicine Department serves as a crux to the smooth functioning of entire Medical college by co ordinating with various other departments. In fact Medicine Department deals with the maximum number of patients than any other department in Medical college. We have the statistics of our department during the period July 2007 to June 2008.
